For my Advertising Graphic Design class we’re technically working on three smaller projects which amount to one big one at the end of the semester. For my level of the class, we’re designing things for a hypothetical restaurant we made up and named Taste. The first project we’ll be working on is the identity system (envelopes, letterheads, etc).
These first few weeks we’ve just been tasked with trying to come up with the overall atmosphere we’d want for the restaurant. I’ve enjoyed the project thus far because it’s going to be what I want it to be and not just a contribution to a group project. I feel like I have more creative independence with it, which could be great or a hindrance. My process has been (and always is) pretty slow. I first started playing around with typefaces that appeal to me and now I’m thinking about what kind of things I’d like to see visually if this restaurant truly existed; saving pictures of such things as tables, chairs, bar chairs, glasses, etc. I feel like my process is working because I’m not trying to think and take on too many things at once. At the same time though, that may work against me. I feel as long as I stay on top of things, my process will work for me and help me a lot with my project. So my experience with the Taste project hasn’t been so bad, but I know if I take it too slow it’ll creep up on me and blow up in my face.
